Does the solution lie with parents?

www.Napoli.com If it does lie with parents, should they be held liable for their children's criminal acts? Another thing that bothers me about this article, is that we are now taking the time to pull out our video cams to tape the beating death of a child. INSTEAD OF INTERVENING!!!!! CHICAGO (Sept. 28) – Three teenagers were charged Monday in the beating death of a 16-year-old Chicago honor roll student on his way home from school, a melee captured on a cell phone video that shows a group striking him with boards and kicking him as he lay on a sidewalk. The death of Derrion Albert, a sophomore at Christian Fenger Academy High School, on Thursday has reignited community outrage over chronic violence involving city students and is putting pressure on school and police officials to address gang problems that often are at the root of such violence. More than 30 students were killed in 2008, according to district figures, and the city could exceed that toll in 2009. Skip over this content But some community members said the solution lies with parents. "It is our problem. We have to take control of our children," said Dawn Allen, who attended a vigil at the school Monday, where a group of residents tried to force their way into the school before being turned back by police. Albert was attacked around 3 p.m. Thursday in front of Agape Community Center in the south Chicago neighborhood of Roseland, where he was walking to a bus stop, authorities said. The violence stemmed from a shooting early Thursday morning involving two groups of students, said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County prosecutor's office. When school ended, members of the two groups began fighting. The attack, captured in part on a bystander's cell phone video, shows Albert being struck on the head by one of several young men wielding wooden planks. After he falls to the ground an appears to try to get up, he is struck again and then kicked. Prosecutors charged Silvonus Shannon, 19, Eugene Riley, 18, and Eric Carson, 16, with first-degree murder, and they were ordered held without bond on Monday, said Andy Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County prosecutor's office. Simonton said Albert was a bystander and not part of either group. She said Albert was knocked unconscious when Carson struck him in the head with a board and the second person punched him in the face. Albert regained consciousness and was trying to get up when he was attacked a second time by five people and was struck in the head with a board by Riley and stomped in the head by Shannon, Simonton said. Desiyan Bacon, Riley's aunt, attended Monday's vigil at the school and said her nephew didn't have anything to do with the beating and was a friend of the victim. "They need to stop the crime, but when they do it, they need to get the right person," Bacon said. Albert's grandfather, Joseph Walker, told the Chicago Tribune that he could not bear to watch the recording. "The graphics are too strong for me," he said. "God bless whoever took that video. It did and said it all." "It hurt to watch," said LaTonia Williams, the boy's aunt, told the paper. "It's one thing to hear about it and come up with your own theory of what happened. To see it is another thing." But the family said they didn't mind people watching the video as long as it helps identify the culprits. Cook County state's attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin says the teens were charged Monday as adults. Copyright 2009 The Associated Press. I read the story about these 3 teens, are parents liable?Often parents don't even feed their children who end up in the streets where they learn violence. Violent parents themselves, often outlaws committing crimes every day have little time to devote to their childrem

so, if they were charged along with their children for their crimes, would it make parents FIND the time to look after them? Anonimo i agree with u totally.

Hi maggie,
I have just read this unbearably horrible story.Poor Lad it doesn't bear thinking about does it ,what he went through.
I agree with what Anonimo has written.Violence like this is often (not always of course) the product of an unstable home life..OR.. NO HOME LIFE.So, a life is created on the streets ..with a GANG -the surrogate family.
IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME HERE....day after day,on our news. HORRIFIC kilings ,similar to the one you have posted. IN some cases YES i blame the parents.THERE IS NO DISCIPLINE OR RESPECT ANYMORE...there is no FEAR of going to prison AS IT'S SEEN AS A GOLD STAR within the group of YOBS/THUGS..).THERE IS NO deterrant.THEY ARE NOT SCARED OF THE POLICE....as they know nothing much will be done as they are under age.w
WHEN I TOOK jessie last night for a walk to the village shop.(10 PM bst)..THERE WERE ABOUT 30 -40 of YOBS.!.girls /boys...some as young as 12...some much older..hanging around, throwing bottles...drunk out of their heads..KICKING THE BUS SHELTER and burning the plastic timetable on the wall.THEY CONGREGATE around the shop lights..(THIS HAPPENS every night...MUCH WORSE AT WEEKENDS...especially if there has been a footie match on..IN THIS CASE I BLAME THE PARENTS..

Sad...and on top of it we are afraid to intervene for fear of being killed ourselves.

Education begins at home and parents are their children's first and most influential teachers.Children learn how to behave by watching people around them. While younger children need our close supervision, teens need the MOST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The world is just too dangerous for our kids. It is our job to do whatever it takes to keep them safe. Mrs krakpot asked the question " why she does not see Karina as much writing in the blog. Right now Karina is raising teenagers! And they come first.

Meg nice to see you again !

I would like to add that I speak my mind without holding my tongue without second, always happy to lend a helping hand. I find it hard not getting involved.

Anna come stai bella? Fai bene a dedicarti ai figli....brava! But as Anonimo said earlier, parents arent always up to the task of raising their children. Drugs, alcohol, and a life of crime with many people are a reality, and not condusive to raising a child properly.
So.....should parents of kids who have committed crimes, be held liable for those crimes? I brought this up because i feel that it would force parents to be more responsible.

Mrs krakpotowska ha detto...

Oh Anna k ,hello love.
Just read your comments .Glad you are here if only for a minute. It's good to see you.
I too used to get involved .with the odd 'fracas'..HOWEVER...at times IT WAS A CRAZY thing to do...I HAVE A BIG MOUTH...AND...when i see something THAT IS wrong...even breaking up fights etc..STOPPING VANDALISM...ANSWERING BACK..(when there are loads of YOBS..AND just trying to reason with them..which IS NIGH ON IMPOSSIBLE when they are DRUNK AND DRUGGED UP !!..i DIVE IN WITHOUT THINKING .... I..always have done.AND BY GOD have i paid for MY being a good citizen etc..

HOWEVER...i know what maggs means..SHE IS SPOT ON....people are afraid TO GET involved -because they are just as likely to get a knife stuck into them now.....as ..has/is/ happening in the streets/towns/cities and villages of Britain today...and much the world over.I keep seeing on the news...people being killed going to either defend someones car/property in the street from being vandalised etc.AND THEY END UP DEAD!...oh! it goes on and on..
Your children are lucky Anna...as they have you to nurture them, to teach them the ways of the world, and what is right and what is wrong.Unfortunately...millions don't have that and they are actually in some cases...EMULATING what they see their own parents doing...they grow up JUST AS ROTTEN AS THEIR OWN FAMILIES.IT'S A CHRONIC PROBLEM.ALSO there is TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON POLITICAL CORRECTNESS...
anyhow...anna..have a great day...x

Mrs krakpotowska ha detto...

I'm STILL thinking MAGGS..about ..'should PARENTS BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR CHILDRENS CRIMES'....UMMMMMMM mmmmmm THIS IS SUCH A DIFFICULT ONE TO ANSWER.IT DEPENDS i think, on so many cirumstances..I NEED A GOOD PAGE TO WRITE ABOUT THIS....my own personal opinion i mean.THE LAW IS TOO SOFT...that's for sure.AND SOME PEOPLE SHOULD NEVER EVER EVER HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO HAVE CHILDREN...IN THE FIRST PLACE...BUT HOW DO YOU STOP THAT???????????

deleted ha detto...

Easy. Take them away and place them in families with parents who really WANT to be parents....with continued state funded supervision and aid. I know it isnt an easy fix, by any means, but someone has to be held responsible. This would also alleviate the problem where parents make their children commit crimes (shoplifting comes to mind, as we have seen on TV in hidden cameras)knowing that the children will not be penalized. What a crazy world we live in.

Meg, I'm riding the merry go round these days ,just never stops, !

im not a parent,so i can't even offer u any advice.
Parenting these days has to be incredibly difficult and frustrating. But your care and concern will remain in their minds forever. You 're in my thoughts...hang in there!!
