One of the minor scales most commonly used in jazz is the melodic(jazz) minor. The formula for this scale is:
1, 2, b3, 4 , 5, 6, 7
C, D, Eb, F, G, A, B.
The chords that correspond with this scale are as follows (with the mode names on the right):
I minor major 7 (9,11,13) Melodic Minor
II minor 7 (b9,11,13) Dorian b2
bIII major 7#5 (9,#11, b13) Lydian Augmented
IV dominant 7 (9, #11, 13) Lydian Dominant
V dominant 7 (9,11, b13) Mixolydian b13
VI minor 7 b5 (9,11,b13) Locrian natural 9
VII dominant 7 alt (b9, #9, b5, #5,) Altered Dominant
Just as major scales and modes have their own sounds and worlds, melodic minor scales and modes have their own colors.
Keep on groovin~
